Heavy diesel mechanic courses cover diesel engine systems, fuel injection, turbocharging, hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical and electronic systems, transmissions, differentials, and braking systems - all applied to heavy vehicles, earthmoving equipment, and mining machinery.
Training takes place in workshops equipped with heavy plant and vehicles, giving you hands-on experience with the scale and complexity of real mining and transport equipment. You will also study preventive maintenance planning, fault diagnosis, and safe working practices in high-risk environments.
Completion leads to a Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology - a nationally recognised AQF trade qualification.
Qualified heavy diesel mechanics find work in mining, oil and gas, construction, agriculture, and long-haul transport - industries spread across all Australian states, including WA, QLD, and NT where salaries are particularly competitive.

The Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology is a nationally recognised AQF Level 3 trade qualification. Like most Certificate III trades it typically takes around 12 months of full-time study, with the timetable built around heavy-plant and machinery workshop time given the scale of the equipment involved.
Indicative tuition for international students commonly sits in the AUD 8,000 to 18,000 range for the full qualification, though figures vary by provider and city. Most providers offer several intakes a year, commonly around February, April or May, July and October, so there are regular opportunities to begin.
