Cost, Duration & Intake Dates
Building and construction programs sit higher on the Australian Qualifications Framework than a standard trade certificate, typically leading to a Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) or a Diploma of Building and Construction. A Certificate IV commonly takes around 12 months, while a Diploma usually runs over roughly 1 to 2 years, depending on the provider and your study load.
Because these are higher-level qualifications, indicative tuition tends to be at the upper end of the vocational range and above. As a guide, expect figures from around AUD 10,000 and rising into the higher tens of thousands for a full Diploma, though this varies significantly by provider and city. Most providers offer several intakes a year, commonly around February, April or May, July and October.
All figures here are indicative and change over time. Active Study helps you choose between the Certificate IV and Diploma based on your goals, then confirms the exact current fees and intake dates with a provider whose qualification meets the licensing prerequisites in your chosen state.
After completing your building and construction qualification, the usual path is to gain Australian industry experience in a supervisory or management role, applying where eligible for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) to extend your work rights while you build your case for skilled migration.
As the course notes, building and construction management occupations appear on multiple skilled occupation lists, which opens pathways to skilled migration visas and ultimately permanent residency. Depending on the specific occupation and where you settle, this may run through state nomination (subclass 190 or 491) or other skilled visa subclasses, subject to a positive skills assessment and your points score.
