What You'll Study

Dive into the intricate field of pathology in Australia. Our programs for international students combine advanced laboratory techniques with cutting-edge research - giving you the scientific grounding to support diagnosis and medical decision-making in Australian hospitals and pathology laboratories.

Pathology programs cover specimen collection and handling, haematology, biochemistry, microbiology, histology, and laboratory quality systems. You will develop proficiency with microscopy, automated analysers, and laboratory information management systems (LIMS).

Practical laboratory classes and supervised clinical placements in accredited pathology laboratories are central to the program. You will learn to apply rigorous quality control standards and interpret laboratory results in the context of clinical care.

Cost and duration of Pathology courses in Australia

Fees & Timeline

Cost, Duration & Intake Dates

Pathology training is delivered at AQF Certificate IV or Diploma level in Laboratory Technology (Pathology Testing). A Certificate IV typically takes around 12 months, while a Diploma usually runs for about 1 to 2 years of full-time study, with practical laboratory classes and supervised placements in accredited pathology laboratories included. Indicative tuition commonly falls in the region of AUD 9,000 to 20,000 in total, depending on the level you choose, although fees vary by provider and location.

Most providers offer several intakes a year, typically around February, April or May, July, and October, so you can usually find a convenient start date. Because course content, placements and fees differ between training organisations, the figures here are indicative only and should be confirmed before you enrol. Active Study will help you find a provider with accredited laboratory placements, confirm the current fees, and select the right intake for you.

Permanent residency pathway after a Pathology course in Australia

Study to PR

Your PR Pathway After This Course

After completing your Certificate IV or Diploma in Laboratory Technology, the usual route is to gain Australian laboratory experience as a medical laboratory assistant or technician and, where eligible, apply for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) to extend your work rights while you plan your skilled migration.

Medical laboratory science is a recognised skilled occupation in Australia, and depending on the specific role and qualification level you reach, skilled visa options such as the subclass 190 or 491 through state nomination, and in some cases the subclass 189, may apply, subject to a successful skills assessment and your points. As occupation lists, state priorities and assessment requirements change over time, any pathway is subject to current requirements and your individual circumstances, and PR cannot be promised. Active Study's MARA-registered agents will assess the pathways available from your pathology qualification.
