What You'll Study

Delve into the world of culinary arts with our Cookery Course, meticulously crafted for international students. Active Study transforms your passion for cooking into a professional chef skillset, preparing you for Australia's dynamic hospitality and food service industry.

Commercial cookery courses cover mise en place, classical and contemporary cooking techniques, nutrition, menu planning, food safety and hygiene, kitchen management, and cost control. You will cook across all cuisine types - from pastry and bread to stocks, sauces, seafood, meats, and vegetarian dishes.

Practical kitchen sessions are the heart of the program. You will train in professional kitchen environments, often with real service components, building speed, consistency, and creativity. Work-integrated learning in hospitality businesses is common.

Completion leads to a Certificate III or Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery - the standard industry entry qualifications required by Australian employers and a prerequisite for Cookery occupations on the MLTSSL.

Cost and duration of Cookery courses in Australia

Fees & Timeline

Cost, Duration & Intake Dates

Commercial cookery is usually delivered as a Certificate III followed by a Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery, both nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework. As an indicative guide, total tuition for these VET-level qualifications commonly ranges from around AUD 8,000 to AUD 18,000, depending on whether you complete one or both certificates. These figures are indicative only and vary by provider and location.

A Certificate III in Commercial Cookery typically takes around 12 months, and continuing to a Certificate IV usually brings the combined study to roughly 18 months to two years, including the substantial practical kitchen and work-integrated learning hours the industry requires. Most providers offer several intakes a year, commonly in February, April or May, July, and October, so you can usually find a start date that suits your visa plan.

Because cookery is offered by many registered providers with different kitchen facilities and placement arrangements, fees vary. Active Study helps you choose a provider with strong industry connections, then confirms the exact current tuition and intake dates before you enrol.

Permanent residency pathway after a Cookery course in Australia

Study to PR

Your PR Pathway After This Course

Commercial cookery is one of the most popular and accessible study-to-PR pathways for international students, though the route still depends on your circumstances. After completing your cookery qualification and gaining workplace experience, you may be able to apply for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) where you meet the requirements, using that time to build the hospitality experience that supports a skilled application.

The course entry notes that Cook and Chef occupations are on Australia's MLTSSL. Because of this national listing, eligible applicants may be able to pursue independent and nominated skilled visas such as the subclass 189, 190, and 491, subject to a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority, your points score, and the current occupation lists. Progressing from Cook to Chef often improves your options.

Points thresholds, occupation lists, and skills assessment requirements change over time, so permanent residency can never be guaranteed. Active Study's MARA-registered agents will confirm the current requirements for the Cook or Chef pathway and map a realistic plan based on your qualification and experience.
