Regional Study in Australia: PR Advantages and Bonus Points Explained
Studying or working in a designated regional area can add five points to your skills assessment and open dedicated visa subclasses. Here's what regional study means for your PR pathway in practice.
One of the most underutilised strategies in the study-to-PR journey is regional study. Many international students gravitate to Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane without realising that studying in a designated regional area can materially improve their migration outcomes, add bonus points to their score, and unlock dedicated visa subclasses not available in major metros.
What Is a "Regional Area" for Migration Purposes?
The Department of Home Affairs designates specific postcodes as "regional" for migration purposes. Broadly, this includes most of Australia outside Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane - and now includes cities like Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, Hobart, Gold Coast, and Sunshine Coast.
Bonus Points for Regional Study
Completing at least one year of study at a regional campus awards 5 additional points in the General Skilled Migration points test. To claim these points, your institution's campus must be physically located in a designated regional area. Distance education or online study at a regional institution's metropolitan campus does not qualify.
Extended Subclass 485 Duration
Studying in a regional area also extends the length of your Subclass 485:
Bachelor's degree: 2 years → 4 years (regional)
Master's by coursework: 3 years → 5 years (regional)
PhD: 4 years → 6 years (regional)
A six-year 485 for PhD graduates who studied regionally is extraordinarily valuable - it gives you enough time to accumulate 5+ years of Australian work experience and build a highly competitive EOI.

Subclass 491 - Skilled Work Regional (Provisional)
The 491 is a provisional PR pathway designed specifically for regional areas. It provides 15 additional points - the highest nomination bonus available - and requires you to live and work in a designated regional area for at least three years after the visa is granted. After three years on a 491 and meeting the income requirement, you can apply for the Subclass 191 Permanent Residence (Regional) visa.
Subclass 191 - Permanent Residence (Regional)
The 191 is the permanent visa that follows three years on a 491. Once granted, it allows you to live anywhere in Australia permanently. For graduates who cannot score enough for a 189 or 190 invitation, the 491/191 pathway via regional study is often the most accessible route to PR.

Regional study is not the right strategy for every international student. The 5 bonus points and extended 485 are valuable, but only if the program you need is available at a qualifying regional campus. If your target occupation requires study at a specialist institution that only exists in a capital city, regional study may not be practical.
