Step 1: Receive a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)
Before you can apply for a student visa, you must first be accepted into a course at a CRICOS-registered Australian institution. Once your offer is accepted and your fees are paid (or a payment arrangement is in place), the institution will issue you a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). This document is required for your visa application.
If you are studying multiple courses back-to-back - such as an English language program followed by a degree - you will typically receive a CoE for each course.
Step 2: Meet the Genuine Student Requirement
The Genuine Student (GS) requirement asks you to demonstrate that you have a genuine intention to study in Australia temporarily and that your chosen course makes sense given your background and future plans.
Most applicants need to provide a personal statement (often called a GS statement) explaining why they chose to study in Australia, how the course aligns with their career goals, and their intention to comply with visa conditions. This statement should be specific, sincere, and well-structured.

A complete Subclass 500 application typically requires:
Valid passport (with at least 6 months beyond your intended stay)
Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from each institution
Genuine Student statement
Evidence of English proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or equivalent - unless exempt)
Evidence of financial capacity (bank statements, scholarship letter, or financial sponsor declaration)
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) - must be arranged before lodging
Academic transcripts and certificates
Character and health requirements (health examinations may be required)
Step 4: Apply Online Through ImmiAccount
Australian student visa applications are lodged online through the Department of Home Affairs' ImmiAccount portal. You will create an account, complete the online form, upload your documents, pay the application fee, and submit.
The current student visa application fee is approximately AUD 650, though this can change. Additional fees may apply for family members included in your application.

Step 6: Wait for a Decision
Processing times vary by nationality and application complexity. For most students, a decision is issued within four to eight weeks. During this time, you can monitor your application through ImmiAccount. If additional documents are requested, respond promptly to avoid delays.
