Tip 1: Secure Your Confirmation of Enrolment First
You cannot apply for a student visa until you have received a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from a CRICOS-registered Australian institution. This document is central to your application - it confirms your enrolment, course details, and the duration of your stay.
If you are studying multiple courses - for example, an English language program followed by a degree - ensure you have a CoE for each. The Department of Home Affairs will grant a visa covering the full duration of your study plus an additional period.
Tip 2: Write a Strong Genuine Student Statement
The Genuine Student (GS) statement is one of the most important documents in your application. It must demonstrate that you have a genuine intention to study in Australia and that your course aligns with your educational background and career aspirations.
A strong GS statement is specific and personal - it clearly explains why you chose Australia, why you chose this particular course and institution, how the qualification connects to your career goals, and your intention to comply with visa conditions and return home upon completion. Generic or vague statements are a common reason for applications being scrutinised more closely or refused.

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is a mandatory requirement for the Subclass 500 visa. You must arrange OSHC before lodging your application - not after. Many institutions offer to arrange OSHC on your behalf as part of the enrolment process, and some institutional agreements require you to use a specific provider.
OSHC covers you for medical and hospital expenses in Australia and is a condition of your visa for the duration of your stay.
